Melghat Tiger Project
• Location :
Melghat Sanctuary is located on the southern slopes of the Gawilgarh hill range in the Satpura Mountains, in Maharashtra, within Amravati district.
• Area :
The total area of this sanctuary is 2768 square kilometers.
• History :
In 1974, due to the presence of a significant number of tigers, Melghat Sanctuary was included among India’s selected tiger projects.
• Climate :
It falls under a tropical dry deciduous region.
• Vegetation :
Teak, Haldu, Bamboo, Wood Apple, Anjan, Mahua, Peepal, Banyan, Tamarind, Sal, Dhaman, Bael, Jamun, Neem, Tendu, Ain, Dhawda, Kusum, Tivas, Amla and many other types of trees and shrubs are found here.
• Animals :
Bengal Tiger, bear, chital (spotted deer), barking deer, leopard, wild boar, wolf, sambar, nilgai, gaur, giant squirrel, four-horned antelope, dhole (wild dog), monkeys, langurs, hyena and similar animals are found here.
• Reptiles :
Various types of reptiles are found here such as snakes, rat snake, python, monitor lizard, Indian cobra, lizards, frogs and snails.
• Birds :
Different migratory birds can be seen here in every season. More than 250 species are found such as owls, hawks, pigeons, kingfishers, barbets, woodpeckers, vultures and colorful birds.
• Places to Visit in the Sanctuary :
• Semadoh :
Located near the riverbed and accommodation facilities are available here.
• Baby Waterfall :
Located in the middle of the forest. It is small, attractive and safe for tourists.
• Sipna River :
There is a dam on this river in the Selu area. Entry is allowed from Koha Forest Gate with permission from the forest department. Korku tribal settlements are found here.
• Jarighat :
Located in the southern part of the forest. It is a dense forest area with tiger movement. There are observation points and a high point ahead.
• Kandari Baba Area :
Observation watchtowers are available here.
• Birding Pond :
This is a bird-watching center where many water birds and migratory birds can be seen.
• Kolkas Region :
Forest safari can be enjoyed on elephant back here.
• Belkund Bridge :
A beautiful bridge with a scenic river flowing beneath it.
• Dolara Baba Temple :
A small Hindu temple located inside the forest.
• Wan River Area :
This is a relatively sparse forest region where many herbivorous animals are found.
• Tribal Life :
There are many small settlements in this forest, mainly inhabited by the Korku tribe.
• Plateau Region / Satpura Range :
The area bordering Madhya Pradesh is densely forested. Hunting is strictly prohibited here.
• Gullar Ghat :
This area is reserved for tigers and contains natural water bodies.
• Khatkhali Region :
Rest houses are available here. The ruins of Ranimahal can also be seen.
• Makhala, Kukru, Kasai :
These are important observation points.
• Other Attractions :
Narnala Fort, Semadoh, Kolkas and Chikhaldara are notable places to visit.
• Transport Routes :
• It is about 250 km from Nagpur.
• It is about 10 km from Badnera railway station.
• It is about 32 km from Chikhaldara.
• Best Time to Visit :
• July to September: Scenic monsoon season, but travel may be difficult.
• October to February: Best time to visit; ideal for bird watching.
• March to May: Wildlife can mostly be seen near water sources.
• Precautions While Visiting :
• It is advisable to have a knowledgeable local guide.
• Avoid carrying plastic bottles or bags; use cloth or paper bags.
• Do not make noise while observing animals and do not touch them.
• Do not leave designated paths; use binoculars for viewing.
• Do not get down from the vehicle during wildlife viewing.
• Use vehicles like canter or gypsy.
• Use a camera for photography instead of a mobile phone.
